Video: Welcome to the 2022 Downcountry Field Test

Expect to pay around $6899 for a similar build. The last Field Test series saw the crew riding enduro bikes in Bellingham, Washington, but things are a lot more en français this time around, and there’s a lot less suspension to save our asses. That’s because we packed up our gear and flew to Quebec City, Canada, with six of the most interesting short-travel bikes to see how they compare and perform away from our usual trails. There are a few different names for this category, some of them more silly and more made-up than others, but the gist is 125mm or less out back and a focus on covering ground quickly. Call the bikes whatever you want, but I think we’ll just call them fun.

View all the options for the mach 5.7 on the Pivot website and check out the new carbon fiber Mach 5.7 due to arrive in late 2011. The Mach 5.7 gets moving easily and covers a lot of ground – especially over rough, rolling terrain. Shimano’s latest XTR two-by-ten transmission is impressive. Shifting feels spot on with every click and we never lost a chain, even when we were pounding slick rock descents spun out in the 38/11 top gear.

You’re 100% allowed to wear them whenever you want, though. Most interresting bikes in the class are for me the Arc8 Evolve FS and the Transition Spur. I would wish me a Field Test with these Bikes. We were supposed to have the SST included in this test but had some delays. I’ve got one now and have been riding it – review really soon. Some really nice riding out here, after living in the Lower Mainland for 6 years, much enjoy riding in the East again.

They really are the best for fitness and getting ‘er done. So you have an issue with RC that appears to be unfounded. I mean, all Im saying is, what is there to say bad about this bike? Why do you assume that because he doesn’t say “this bike rides like garbage” that he’s full of it?

A brain is a lot harder to heal than a bone and Alicia’s future riding bikes, forget being a bike journalist, is in real jeopardy. I think it makes a lot more sense to categorize bikes by fork they are designed for and frame weight than by rear travel. Once you go 130 on fork, you may as well go 140 and have more rear travel as well.

The issue of stem length is based on individual preference and riding style, but coming shipped with a wider bar that can be cut down would be preferable to forcing the customer to swap out bars immediately. I usually do not comment on these types of articles and debates, but I had to give my two cents on this one. I personally am STOKED that RC has joined the PB team and added some much needed diversity to the content. I understand that the majority of users on this site prefer the gravity side of our sport, and as such there is bound to be some complaining when anything but the latest DH or DJ bike is tested.

Yes rotors are metric yet we still see morons constantly calling the 160mm rotors as 6 inch when they’re actually 6.3 inches. We see this in magazine reviews and we see this in forum posts and classified ads. But if you really need to nitpick out this pivot review to a typo on the rotor size… I think that 15mm axles are here just to separate the XC and trail forks from the bigger ones. Wouldn’t be comparing the SX Trail to this pivot, compare the SX Trail to the Pivot Firebird. This is squarely aimed at the stumpjumper FSR evo.

  • I don’t know how the magazines work, but at Pinkbike, the bike companies aren’t paying for reviews, adspace is paying for reviews, and all other content for that matter.
  • Of course there are competitors in the class…
  • Perhaps you should actually read and understand the patent?
  • This is squarely aimed at the stumpjumper FSR evo.

Order yours with real rubber and shred happily unto the world. We feel that the now-standard 40/28 (SRAM 39/26) double-chainring gearing is too tall for trail work unless your legs are race ready. On the occasion when we did top uber-technical climbs with fresh legs, we left defeated riders open-mouthed on the sideline. Insist on a two-by crankset, but consider 38 by 24 or a 36 by 24-tooth gearing to maximize the Pivot’s performance. That’s what mountain bike geometry should look like, even for XC race bikes.

Pivot Mach 5.7 Review

There are several instances in the above review that mention negative traits of the bike, so it’s not all lollipops and rainbows in RC’s world. It’s a bit like when you met your girlfriend for the first time and you had xtroptions price to seperate the history between her and that other a-hole she used to be with. Regardless of her history, you appreciate who she is now, what she has learned in life, and that those experiences brought her to you.

The head angle is not so slack that the bike has to be pushed around corners with the outside handlebar. Rather, the 5.7’s steering feels like an integrated part of its handling package – light at the bars with just the right amount of turn-in to encourage a confident flow. We attribute the Pivot’s new found cornering abilities to its lower bottom bracket, modern steering geometry and a better-balance between the shock and fork action. The limiting factor for hard cornering was the rear tire, which turned this phase of testing into a driftathon.

Complete Mach 5.7s start at $3899 for the Shimano SLX build and top out around $6900 for SRAM XX and Shimano XTR options. Nah, we’ve all been riding long enough and have ridden more than enough bikes to know and, even more importantly, communicate how the bikes are different and what these price tags actually mean on the trail. Personally, I love having outliers like the RSD in group tests because it makes it much more interesting. No matter how much nuance the PB team try to build into the article – whingers gotta whinge. Please be sure to have a good old yarn about the field test on the Podcast too, always enjoy the more ‘unchanined’ comments outside of the more polished actual written/video reviews. Glad to see that even thought RC has left Mountain Bike Action, Pivot is still giving him bikes and all expense paid trips to ride bikes so that he can write gushing reviews of them.

Wallet Links Don’t work. Please fix!

On one hand Im not sure what to think. I think with his presence one can safely say that it will be a fair review. However, I do think coming from MBA it throws a bit of dirt up..

The effect would be the rear axle gets further away from the BB for the first portion of stroke. I don’t need reviewers or product managers manipulating me with the word ” FUN” to sell a bike for 7000$. ” Fun” is for jet skies., I understand that the new weekend warrior that is to buy this bike is the old Jet ski, motocross guy.

Missing conspicuously from the Pivot Mac 5.7 was a remote-adjust seatpost. The hose guides are on the frame, but the bike did not have the one item that almost every ‘5.7 rider needs to maximize this stealth shredder’s fun factor. As mentioned, we also pondered Pivot’s decision to fit a nearly bald Kenda Slant Six tire to such a technically capable trailbike.

When visiting the Pivot site there is a close-up picture of the rear wheel with a 160mm rotor installed. But aside that the bike looks really nice. Up front, we found that 30-percent sag with 3 to 4 clicks of low-speed compression balanced well with the shock. The Fox Fit damping system has an anti-bottom-out feature, so don’t expect the O-ring https://cryptolisting.org/ on the stanchion to run to the end of the fork travel unless you pound something hard enough to bend a rim. Rebound was set 4 clicks out and all seemed well and good. Those in search of a single bike that can span the wide gap between a lightweight climber and a capable all-mountain rig will find the Mach 5.7 will be tough to beat.

I’d ride, and certainly enjoy, all of them. The BMC looks sensational and the RSD is a great inclusion and a good price. Fun fact – if you go to their website and start the chat, you’re actually talking to Alex, owner of the company and designer.

Never liked the bent seat tube and linkage set up. This and the Firebird are at the top of my must-ride list at Outerbike next year. I’m guessing you are responding to a comment that has already been pulled. Isaacds do realize that those flags say where your living not where your from….

Don’t care about the bikes in the test , stoked to see WHERE these were tested. Some off bike choices, but it’ll be more interesting that way, not a bunch of big names, two domestic carbon frames (boom!), and Evil (wtf?!), and RSD doing what they do . You should put a -2 angleset into one of those bikes and give your impressions. Everything but looks aside, none of these bikes hold a candle to the evil. They sure know how to make a sexy looking bike.
